Mothers and babies

The Bowen technique may be beneficial throughout the entire lifecycle of the pregnancy, from helping with conception to treating the mother and baby shortly after child birth.

Conception

Couples, especially those who have not been able to conceive for unexplained reasons, may want to try the Bowen Technique. During the Bowen Conception Protocol both would be parents are treated and given specific guidelines to follow. Ask your therapist for more information.

During pregnancy

The Bowen technique may help with many of the discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as:

  • backache,
  • sciatica,
  • aches,
  • swelling of ankles,
  • nausea,
  • tiredness,
  • loss of energy,
  • constipation,
  • heartburn,
  • headaches, and
  • carpal tunnel syndrome.

As the Bowen technique can be effectively carried out with clients sitting in a chair, lying on their side, or lying on their back, pregnant mothers could choose amongst treatment positions and the use of pillows to aid comfort.

After childbirth: the Mother

A lot of new mothers find that it takes their body time to recover after childbirth. The Bowen Technique may speed up this recovery process by helping to readjust the pelvis, reduce post-natal associated discomforts and provide much needed relaxation. Bowen may also help with lactation problems and tiredness. The first Bowen treatment on the mother can be performed as early as one week after giving birth.

After childbirth: the Baby

The Bowen technique may help, if the newborn baby:

  • has feeding problems,
  • prefers to feed on one side,
  • does not like turning its head one way,
  • cries a lot ie displays colic like symptons,
  • suffers from projectile vomiting, and
  • suffers from asthma like breathing problems.

Treating a newborn does not normally take longer then 15 minutes and normally one or two Bowen treatments are enough to address the problem. The first Bowen treatment on the baby can be performed as early as one week after childbirth.
